Chapter 5: Page 17
Hey guys! Did those of you at Emerald City Comic Con happen to notice some Stray Sod comics down there? How cool was that! Thank you to the readers who picked some up.
There were no updates in March because my workload was so heavy. I was able to do a little bit with Stray Sod here and there, behind the scenes, but nothing that’s amounted to a finished page until now. Enjoy!
I have been anticipating drawing these last pages of Issue 5 since they were scripted. I can’t wait for you to see them, but progress is going to continue to be gradual as the Calgary Expo is coming up, and I’ve got lots to do before then. As you can probably guess, Issue 5 will not be available in print by then, but my intent is to have it ready for the Panel One Comic Festival.
I’m excited about a Stray Sod merchandise announcement coming up this month, too, so watch out for that.
VOTE for the comic!
Okay, I thought that the bit about why Ina didn’t do things much was just that she felt she couldn’t compete with herself sister. That’s so passive-aggressive-I think? I am not 100% sure that I’m interpreting the soda bread thing correctly-more like 95%-98%.
The way I read it, which could totally be wrong, is that Ina saw all this as: after she received a compliment from their parents for making something, her sister made the same thing better (not burnt), and again later, with another recipe.
In Ina’s mind, Jienny is trying to be the better child, doing every thing well and always surpassing her. For Ina, the one who makes a competition out of their family life, is Jienny. Ina doesn’t try, and something tells me she never made soda bread again after this episode.
It’s less that she thinks she can’t compete and more that she doesn’t want to compete. With the result that every attempt to have her own, personal thing, she’ll eventually give it up because “of course”, Jienny is better at it.
Of course, all of this is in Ina’s mind, so we cannot know how much of Jienny’s behaviour is indeed competition. For all we know, she could just love soda bread. Which… actually, seems to be the case, since this page : http://comic.chelseacrutchley.com/comic/chapter-3-page-1/ has Jienny proclaiming “Oh man, I’m having soda bread for breakfast every day. I’ve decided.”
I was saying that Jienny was being passive-aggressive.
Yeech, the nagging feeling she’s trying to be the favorite… even if she doesn’t, even if Ina makes every effort to suppress it… it must hurt.
